And yet, for me the only thing of importance about Barack Obama is:

He espouses no galvanizing political idea. He is unable to say what he means by "change" or "hope" or "the future." And he has failed to say how he would actually be a "unifier." By the evidence of his slight political record (130 "present" votes in the Illinois state legislature, little achievement in the U.S. Senate) Barack Obama stacks up as something of a mediocrity.

The man doesn't have a track record. There are a lot of things that he supposedly stands for on his campaign site, but nothing that he's followed through on, really.

It seems whenever I point that bit out to people their response is something along the lines of: Well, all politicians are vague...and it's not like any of them follow through on their campaign promises anyway.
Of course if he DOES get elected I will begrudgingly ignore any of their complaints.
And whenever I bring up lame things like, he (is/was? not sure any more) a smoker, his followers are shocked, not because they're anti smoking, but because he's kept it so under wraps. If he's willing to hide something so minor and trivial what else do they think he will avoid or try to cover up if he gets in office.
Again, his followers respond with: Well, all politicians lie.

The incredibly wise statement of "If everyone jumped off a bridge, would you too?" comes to mind.

Sadly, I find it hard to believe that there will be any decent candidates again this election. We'll be pigeonholed into a 2 party system again where revolutionary ideas that would be great for the nation tend to get stifled by the career politicians who are more worried about their jobs and paychecks than the good of the country anyway. I'm too young to be this jaded.
